Roof Leak Repairs in Preston

A ceiling stain gives you a place to start looking, but the opening in the roof can be some distance away.

Watch the timing

Notice when the leak appears. If it starts almost as soon as there is a heavy downpour, say so. If nothing happens until it has been raining for several hours, that is useful too. Also mention if it only leaks when the wind is blowing from a particular direction.

Use the loft if there is safe access

If you can get into the loft safely, look for fresh damp on the felt, rafters or insulation. Follow it upwards if you can. The place where water appears on the ceiling may be some distance from the actual leak.

Old marks can mislead

Timber often keeps a dark stain long after a previous leak has been repaired. What matters is fresh moisture during new rain.

Repairs should follow the route

Replacing the nearest worn-looking slate may solve nothing if the water is arriving from a chimney, valley or higher joint.

Want the roof looked at?

Tell the roofer what you have seen and what the weather was like when it happened. If you can take a photograph safely from the ground, include one that shows the whole area of roof.
